Paul Haigh

, HAIGH Architects + Designers
Numerous projects included branch-inspired pitchers with many spouts, a platter made of fused glass nuggets and drinking glasses enclosing the raw nugget material. Vases made by blowing glass into another bubble of glass, allowing it to cool, and breaking the outer bubble with chains. Natural forces—such as gravity and raindrops—were used to shape and decorate the glass.

[Glass] is a contradiction of liquid/solid, fragile/tough, sharp/soft, masculine/feminine, dangerous/benign, thick/thin, translucent/transparent, heavy/light, etc. The GlassLab sessions expose all of these opposites and enable each designer to respond in an immediate and personal way. The explorations take on the literal, figurative, abstract, geometric, formal or informal expressions of a material responsive to design.
For my part, the serendipitous aspect of glassmaking is its unique quality. It is fleeting and demanding at the same time, fragile and masculine in the same moment.

Paul Haigh was born in England in 1949. He completed his B.A. at Leeds Polytechnic in 1972, and he received his master’s degree (M.Des.) from the Royal College of Art, London in 1975. He immigrated to the United States in 1978 to design for Knoll International.

Haigh established HAIGH Architects LLC in New York in 1981, as a multi-disciplinary architecture and design practice. Award-winning architectural works in the U.S. include the Vitra U.S.A. factory in Allentown, PA, and the Knoll International Design Center, Caroline’s Comedy Theatre, and the Brooks Brothers flagship store in New York City. His furniture, object, and lighting designs include projects for Knoll, Steuben Glass, Bernhardt, Rosenthal US, Esprit, Bieffe, and Artemide/RezekUS. Haigh’s drawings and projects have been shown at the Guggenheim Museum/ SoHo, Parsons School of Design, and the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York and the Dentsu Gallery and the Royal College of Art in London.

Haigh is a former adjunct professor at Parsons The New School of Design and a fellow of the Worldesign Foundation. He has served as chairman of the American Institute of Architects Interiors Awards Committee, and as member of the American Institute of Architects, and the Architectural League of New York. Since 2006, Haigh has led the LiquidFusion glass design workshops at Boisbuchet, in Lessac, France, in collaboration with The Corning Museum of Glass.
