In August 2006, Steve Gibbs from The Corning Museum of Glass teamed up with architect Paul Haigh and glass artist Charlie Parriott to present Liquid Fusion, a design workshop focused on glass at the Domaine de Boisbuchet, a cooperative effort of the Vitra Design Museum and the Centre Georges Pompidou, C.I.R.E.C.A. (Centre International de Recherche et d’Education Culturelle et Agricole) in the Charente region of Southwest France.

The Liquid Fusion course looked at glass as a material that can transform process into poetry. Investigating the ephemeral and sublime qualities of glass as a rich palette for innovation and intervention, Liquid Fusion participants worked immediately with multiple glass forming processes including hand pressing, off-hand blowing, slumping, fusing and cold glass cutting and forming. Glassmaking was examined as an art form with pertinent methodologies for today's design disciplines. Design challenges encouraged the designers to developed ideas and fabricate glass concepts at multiple scales from fashion to furniture, from artifact to architecture.

The twelve 2006 workshop participants were drawn internationally from a broad range of disciplines including, fashion design, industrial design, jewelry design and academia. None of the designers had previous glass design or glassmaking experience.
